Abdur was born and brought up in Mardan (Pakistan), and achieved a Faculty of Science Certificate (FSc) in Risalpur. Deciding to pursue a career at sea he completed a graduate diploma at the Pakistan Marine Academy in 1992. During 1996 Abdur attended college in Melbourne (Australia), where he achieved his Certificate of Competency 2nd Mate (Unlimited) with Advanced Diploma. He then sailed as 3rd and 2nd Officer on various types of ships including; General cargo, Containers and Bulk Carriers.
In September 2001, Abdur came to the UK and at Fleetwood Nautical College achieved his Chief Mate (unlimited) Certificate of Competency and a Diploma in National Higher Education before returning to sea, sailing as Chief Officer on a variety of ships.
Following successful completion of his Class 1 Master (Unlimited) qualification in April 2013, Abdur wished to pursue a career ashore, particularly in teaching, and moved, with his family to Shetland in May 2014 to join the Nautical team at NAFC Marine Centre.
