This course leads to the award of a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Marine Engineering.

This shore-based course is relevant to anyone interested in pursuing a career in general, mechanical or electrical engineering, either at sea or on shore, or who wishes to continue to further study in these fields. It would also meet some of the academic requirements for certification as a Merchant Navy Engineer Officer.

The course would suit candidates who have completed Secondary 5 at school and are looking for an alternative route into Higher Education.


Entry Requirements

You should normally have a National Certificate in Engineering (SCQF level 6) or at least two Higher passes at Grade C or above, one of which should be Mathematics or a Physical Science.

Other equivalent qualifications and/or relevant experience may also be accepted.

  • Electro-Technology
  • Stability and Structure of Merchant Ships
  • Pneumatics and Hydraulic Systems
  • Auxiliary Systems
  • Propulsion
  • Fundamentals of Control Systems and Transducers
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Safety Engineering and the Environment


This a full-time taught course delivered at the NAFC Marine Centre from September to about June.
