Training Grants for Seafarers


Seafarers undertaking training at the NAFC Marine Centre may be able to obtain funding towards the cost of their course from a number of sources.

Further specific information on Training Grants for Fishermen is also available.

NAFC can provide advice and guidance, but applications for funding must be made directly to the organisations concerned.

Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS)

Students undertaking a full-time Higher Education course (HNC, HND or degree) may apply to Student Awards Agency for Scotland for tuition fee grants, student loans and bursaries.

Further information is available on the SAAS website (how to apply), including a Guidance booklet on full-time undergraduate support.

  • If you have never previously applied to SAAS for funding you should use the First Application section of the SAAS website.
  • If you have previously applied to SAAS for funding you should use the Applied Before section of the SAAS website.
  • NAFC's HNC and HND courses are classed as 'full-time'. If you are applying for funding for the  you must state 'January' as the start date.

Marine Society

The Marine Society encourages seafarers' professional development and offers support to seafarers who want to improve their prospects, including through scholarship schemes and interest-free loans.

The Mars Training Ship Fund

The Mars Training Ship Fund may award bursaries or grants to people of promise to enable them to attend courses in preparation for, or continuation of, a career in the merchant navy. Grants are awarded twice yearly, in March and September. For an application form please contact:

Maritime Education Foundation

The Maritime Education Foundation may provide grants to unemployed merchant navy officers and ratings to help them undertake approved training leading to STCW 2010 certification.

The Theodore Salvesen Memorial Trust

The Theodore Salvesen Memorial Trust's objective is to promote "the welfare, dignity and efficiency of members and intending members of the British Merchant Navy" by giving grants where financial hardship / difficulty is experienced.
