Young Marine Explorers
Mums and Dads, Grandparents, Child Minders and Carers are all welcome to pop in with the bairns and borrow books - all that is needed is a simple registration.
You'll find us in the library on the first floor of the John Goodlad Centre - NAFC Marine Centre in Port Arthur, Scalloway. Just follow the signs for the Library.
We would also be delighted to see nursery classes, childcare groups and primary classes for group visits.
It is possible to arrange loans of a box of books for your class - please speak to the Librarian to set this up.
About the Explorers Corner
The Young Marine Explorers Corner at the NAFC Marine Centre Library was set up at the beginning of 2011 to offer an extra dimension to the facilities on offer at the Centre.
Although mainly intended as a facility to support students, teaching staff and researchers at the Centre, the NAFC Marine Centre's library also offers computers and internet facilities to both local people and visitors. Anyone can register as an 'external borrower' and borrow up to two books at a time.
We hope that the Young Marine Explorers Corner will further encourage people in the area to come and see what the Centre has to offer, as well as promoting an interest in the Sea and Maritime industries.
How to Borrow Books
Borrowing books is easy!
The first time you visit, simply register the child's name and address with a member of library staff. The library is open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, but there is not always a member of staff on duty. We suggest that you contact us ahead of time, the first time you visit, to make sure there will be someone available to register you.
Once registered, you can borrow books even if there are no staff on duty. There is a 'self-service' sheet on the Librarian's desk - just fill out the details (name of the borrower, name and bar-code number of the book).
Books are loaned for 4 weeks at a time.
