Marine species

NAFC Marine Centre UHI authored “A Biosecurity Plan for the Shetland Islands”.  We carry out routine monitoring of marine non-native species around Shetland and have hands-on experience in their identification.  Marine non-native species (NNS) are plants and animals that have been introduced to a geographic location outside of their natural home range.  NNS that are able to successfully establish a self-sustaining population that cause negative economic, environmental, and/or health impacts on the recipient environment/community are termed invasive non-native species (INNS).  A biosecurity plan provides a useful and practical guidance framework for reducing the potential for NNS introduction and minimising their associated impacts.

We can provide advice and guidance for business, based on legal requirements, for creating and implementing biosecurity plans, as well as advising on best practice for your marine project, and species identification and monitoring.
