Brief History

In 1993 when I was 15, I left school for the pelagic fishing industry onboard the MFV Charisma. The Klondykers were still in Lerwick/Ullapool at that time where we landed most of our fish. I spent 11 years there Purse Seining, Trawling and Pair Trawling on all three of their vessels. We mainly fished for Mackerel and Herring but also occasionally for Horse Mackerel and Atlanto Scandia Herring. We landed in a few different countries including Norway, Denmark and Ireland. In 1998 I sat and passed my Class 2 Deck Officers ticket here at the NAFC.

In 2004 I made the move to the salmon industry with Scottish Sea Farms where I spent two years rearing salmon. I was site health and Safety rep and also gained SVQ 2 & 3 in aquaculture

In 2006 I joined up with No Catch ltd where I worked on the harvest boat Omega at Vidlin and rearing Cod and Trout at Mangaster.

In 2008 I started at the NAFC as Fish Farm Manager where we did salmon sea lice/wrasse trials at the Lea o’ Trondra. I also helped out in other departments: Hatchery, Atlantia, Langa, Moder Dy and we were involved in the design/build of the Havra. Ended up out on Hjaltland site with Havra.

In 2011 I got a job with the Lerwick Port Authority on the Pilot boats/Tugs where we Tied up/Let go of vessels as well as towing and assisting pilot onboard amongst other general duties.

I returned to NAFC as Aquaculture Assessor in 2015.
