Introduction

This blended learning programme leads to the award of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nautical Science and fulfills part of the educational and training requirements for a Chief Mate's Unlimited Certificate of Competency.

Blended learning combines self-study with college-based tuition and assessment, making this course ideal for those wanting to work towards the HND while working at sea.

Details

This HND in Nautical Science meets the requirements of 'an approved education and training programme', one of the criteria that must be fulfilled to obtain a Chief Mate's Unlimited Certificate of Competency (CoC) under the STCW code:

(a) Hold a valid Officer of the Watch (OOW) Unlimited Certificate of Competency.
(b) Have completed 12 months’ watchkeeping service while holding an OOW Unlimited CoC.
(c) Hold the applicable ancillary and safety course certificates.
(d) Successfully complete an approved education and training programme.
(e) Pass SQA Chief Mate written exams in Navigation and Stability and Structure.
(f) Hold a valid ENG1 (medical fitness certificate) or accepted equivalent.
(g) Pass MCA oral examination `B’.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have at least a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Nautical Science.

NOTE: Candidates wishing to obtain a Chief Mate's Certificate of Competency will have to meet additional sea-time and qualification requirements.

The course includes the following modules:

  1. Marine Passage Planning
  2. Management of Bridge Operations
  3. Applied Marine Meteorology
  4. Ship stability: Theory and Practical Application
  5. Marine Vessels: Structures and Maintenance
  6. Management of Vessel Operations
  7. Shipmaster's Business
  8. Shipboard Management
  9. Nautical Science Graded Unit 2*
  10. Nautical Science Graded Unit 3*
  11. Marine Engineering Systems
  12. Information Technology - Application software

Assessment will be by written examination at the end of each unit.

* The Graded Units (modules 9 and 10) test the student's ability to draw together information from multiple modules with respect to the management of operational aspects of a Merchant Vessel and both analyse and process that information at a level appropriate for the Chief Mate Unlimited Certificate of Competency.
