Introduction

This course prepares students to sit the written and oral examinations required to obtain an Officer of the Watch, < 500 GT, Near-Coastal Area Certificate of Competency from the MCA (STCW III/3).

Holders of this certificate are qualified to act as an officer of the watch on ships of less that 500 gross tonnage operating in the UK near-coastal trading area (within 150 miles of a safe haven in the UK or 30 miles of Ireland).

Entry Requirements

Candidates must:

  • be at least 18 years of age.
  • have completed 36 months relevant seagoing servive in a deck capacity.
  • have applied to the MCA for a notice of eligibility.

Content

The course prepares students to sit the written and oral examinations required to obtain an Officer of the Watch <500 GT Certificate of Competency.

There are three written examinations:

  • General Ship Knowledge
  • Chart-work and Coastal Navigation
  • Meteorology

Plus an oral examination.

Delivery

This is a 12 week full-time course delivered at the NAFC Marine Centre (11 weeks of tuition and 1 week of exams).
