Second Engineer <3000 kW (STCW)
This course prepares students to sit the written and oral examinations required to obtain a Second Engineer <3,000 kW (unlimited) Certificate of Competency from the MCA (STCW III/3).
Holders of this certificate are qualified to act as Second Engineer on merchant ships of less that 3,000 kW power anywhere in the world.
With additional qualifying seagoing service holders of this certificate may apply for a Second Engineer <9,000 kW (near coastal) Endorsement (STCW III/2) qualifying them to act as Second Engineer on merchant ships of up to 9,000 kW power operating in the UK Near Coastal Area (within 150 miles of a safe haven in the UK or 30 miles of Ireland).
Candidates must hold an MCA Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Certificate of Competency.
The course prepares students to sit the MCA written and oral examinations required to obtain a Second Engineer <3,000 kW Certificate of Competency.
There are five written examinations:
- General Engineering Science I
- General Engineering Science II
- Applied Marine Engineering
- Advanced Hotel Services
- Chief Engineer Statutory and Operational Requirements
Plus an oral examination covering: constructional details, working principles and safe and efficient operation of plant, the correct use of equipment provided for the safety of the ship and the protection of the environment, and the legal and management responsibilities of a certificated engineer officer. This is a 13 week full-time course delivered at the NAFC Marine Centre (12 weeks of tuition and 1 week of exams.
